Hailing from Perth, Western Australia, The Kryptonics were a tough, melodic pop punk outfit that existed between 1985 and 1992. They were contemporaries of celebrated Perth bands, The Stems, The Triffids & The Bamboos and were a popular local band of that time. They released a series of 7" singles and 12" vinyl EPs on a number of Australian independent record labels.
Kryptonics was founded in 1965 and originally manufactured polyurethane products for the mining and computer industry.
In the mid-1970s the company introduced the Kryptonics Star*Trac line of wheels that drastically changed the functionality of skateboards. It was the first company to offer wheels in color coded durometers, and to use millimeter sizing. Kryptonics soon became the dominant wheel for all types of skateboarding, excelling on all types of terrain and winning more races than any other wheel brand.
Top professional skateboarders such as Stacy Peralta, Tony Alva, Steve Alba, Micke Alba, David Hackett, Bobby Piercy, Tommy Ryan and many others were sponsored by Kryptonics.
In 1997 Kryptonics merged with Bravo Sports and is today a brand owned by Bravo sports. In connection with the merger a new firm, Kryptane Systems L.L.C., was created. Kryptane Systems L.L.C. focuses on a wide range of commercial urethane products such as springs and ski racks.
Kryptonics still sells longboard wheels as well as creating their own one ply decks sold at Walmart. They are known for their low quality and low pop.
