Kottayam (koʊttɑːjəm) is a city in the Indian state of Kerala covering an area of . It is the administrative capital of Kottayam district and is located in south-central Kerala with a city population of 129,894 and UA population of 357,533 according to the . Kottayam is known as the city of three 'L's - Literacy, Lakes and Latex. Kottayam is the first town to achieve 100% literacy rate in India and thereby set a new record in1989. Now, Kottayam enjoys the glory of being the first Tobacco-free city as well. The Kottayam Municipality was established in 1924. It was one of the main centres of literature and hence was called AksharaNagari or Land of Letters. Many of the first Malayalam dailies like Deepika, Malayala Manorama, Mangalam were started and are headquartered in Kottayam.
