Kaviraj is a title of honor, which was given to poets, bards, singers attached to royal court in medieval India. In Hindi and many other Indian languages, like Gujarati, such persons are identified as Kavi. A many of them, were given honorary title of Kaviraj. The descendants of such persons also started using the surname, Kaviraj.

The surname is usually found in people of Gujarat, Rajasthan, etc. One of the community where this surname is often found is Charan, who took singing as profession. The other such community are Gadhvi, Barot.

Kaviraj (lyricist)

Kaviraj is an Indian lyricist, writer and film director. He is best known for writing lyrics for Kannada films since his debut in 2003 for the film Kariya. He has written lyrics for over.1000 feature film songs and has won many awards including Filmfare Awards South and Suvarna Film Awards. He is considered one of the top lyricists of Kannada cinema in the present times.

Kaviraj debuted as a film director with the 2016 film, Maduveya Mamatheya Kareyole.
