Jurong

Jurong (, ) is a geographical region located at the south-westernmost point of the West Region of Singapore. Its main composition consists of the planning areas of Jurong East, Jurong West, Boon Lay, Pioneer and Tuas. Along with these planning areas, Jurong's territory also extends southwards to cover some nearby offshore islands. They include Pulau Damar Laut and Pulau Samulun, both of which are located within Jurong East and Boon Lay respectively; along with Jurong Island, which is a part of the Western Islands cluster. Although originally a single township, Jurong has since been segmented into various districts and towns over the course of its development. As such, Jurong has been variously described as an area, a district and an industrial town, although there is no one term that can correctly describe what Jurong actually is. The region is bordered by Tengah to the north, the Western Water Catchment to the north-west, Bukit Batok to the north-east, Clementi to the east along with a maritime boundary with the Western Islands to the south. Jurong also shares an international maritime border with the Malaysian state of Johor to the west. The coastline of the region on mainland Singapore, faces the strait of Selat Jurong, while the southernmost island of the region, Jurong Island, faces the strait of Selat Pandan.

Jurong was industrialized in the early 1960s, in a response to the economic situation of post-war Singapore. The redevelopment of the region paved the way for the opening of an industrial sector in the Republic, something which was unprecedented of at the time. Before the creation of shopping malls and proper amenities in Jurong, the location of the region was relatively far from where most of the larger brick and mortar businesses were located, which were often found in the city.

Jurong, much like Queenstown and Toa Payoh, was also one of the earliest prototypes of a self-contained satellite town in Singapore. Such a concept allowed residents of said towns to work, live and play in small planned communities away from the more overcrowded and densely packed metropolitan districts of the city. The region, however, is not the second oldest satellite town in Singapore, as the original entity of Jurong Town was dissolved in 1979 and subsequently replaced with the present new towns of Jurong East and West.

Today, the rapid growth and development of Jurong has led it to become one of the most densely populated places in the city-state. With an estimated population of over 357,000 people. Jurong's planning structure and model has become the basis of many new towns and industrial estates in Singapore, such as those of Kallang, Pasir Ris and Woodlands.
