Jamali (artist)

Jamali, a New York-based artist for over 40 years, is the originator of the style Mystical Expressionism. The history of his works has been published by Rizzoli International Publishing, Inc. Art historians Donald Kuspit, Mark Strand and Philip Bishop have published books on Jamali's works, and articles featuring his pieces are published frequently, most often in Florida. The artist is represented internationally, and owns and operates three galleries of his own - one in New York City; one in Fort Lauderdale, Florida; and one in Winter Park, Florida.

Jamali's complex surfaces and mystical imagery have been compared to the neo-expressionists Anselm Kiefer and Georg Baselitz. His gestural techniques link him to Jackson Pollock and the New York School, while the pre-eminent art critic Donald Kuspit argues that Jamali's singular method requires its own name—Mystical Expressionism. Jamali paints with his feet, making his signature foot print on every work he produces. He imbues his work with a spirituality unique to abstract figures, and prides himself on defying tradition with his female nudes, none of whom are modeled after real people.

Jamali's work is now documented in two volumes, Mystical Expressionism and Mystical Expressionism — Dreams and Works, each published by Rizzoli International Publications, with a foreword by Donald Kuspit. Jamali also launched Mardan Publishing, Inc., which offers limited edition artist proofs of Jamali's works as well as a series of catalogs showcasing these prints and publications. Many of Jamali's innovations are now linked to the Jamali Foundation in Winter Park, Florida, which is the largest living-artist foundation in the United States.
