Jakobselva (Vadsø)

Jakobselva (; ; ) is a river in Finnmark county, Norway. The river, which is sometimes known as the Vestre Jakobselv (Western Jacob's River), runs through the municipalities of Nesseby and Vadsø on the Varanger Peninsula. The river begins around the mountain Midthaugen in Nesseby, near the border with Tana Municipality. It then winds its way down through a lush birch wood valley along the municipal border between Nesseby and Vadsø to the village of Vestre Jakobselv where it completes its journey and empties into the Varangerfjorden.

The river is known as a superb sport fishing river, with a lot of big salmon.

Jakobselva

Jakobselva may refer to two different rivers in northern Norway:

  • Jakobselva (Sør-Varanger), a river in Sør-Varanger municipality in Finnmark county, Norway
  • Jakobselva (Vadsø), a river in Vadsø municipality in Finnmark county, Norway
Jakobselva (Sør-Varanger)

Jakobselva or Grense Jakobselv River is a river that runs along the Russia-Norway border. The river runs along the border of Sør-Varanger Municipality in Finnmark county, Norway, and Pechengsky District in Murmansk Oblast, Russia. The river discharges into the Varangerfjorden, a bay off the Barents Sea.

This river is known as a superb salmon fishing river, but where the river forms the border only Norwegian citizens and long-term residents of Norway are permitted to fish, and then only on the Norwegian side of the river ( fishing license needed). The Russian side is normally not accessible, something which is a general rule for all the Russian border to Norway and Finland.

The Jakobselva lends its name to the small village of Grense Jakobselv, near the mouth of the river in Norway.
