Hittorf tube
Hittorf tube \Hit"torf tube\ (Elec.)
A highly exhausted glass tube with metallic electrodes nearly in contact so as to exhibit the insulating effects of a vacuum. It was used by the German physicist W. Hittorf (b. 1824).
