Hicksite

Hicksite \Hicks"ite\, n. A member or follower of the ``liberal'' party, headed by Elias Hicks, which, because of a change of views respecting the divinity of Christ and the Atonement, seceded from the conservative portion of the Society of Friends in the United States, in 1827.

Hicksite

1828, noun and adjective, in reference to a seceding group of American Quakers, from the name of their spiritual leader, Elias Hicks. The remainder were known as Orthodox Friends.

I met many who called themselves Unitarian Quakers, others were Hicksites, and others again, though still wearing the Quaker habit, were said to be Deists.

This division into two opposing camps, known as the Hicksites and the Orthodox, continues and is likely to remain.
