Hettwer is a surname of German origin. It comes from the first name Hathuward, which is composed of hadu, or strife, and ward, or guard. The surname therefore refers to protection. An immigrant, Anna Siegel, was the child of one Joanna Hettwer of Heine, Germany (now Kolejka, Poland).
