What is "heterography"

Heterography \Het`er*og"ra*phy\, n. [Hetero- + -graphy.] That method of spelling in which the same letters represent different sounds in different words, as in the ordinary English orthography; e. g., g in get and in ginger.

"incorrect spelling," 1783; see hetero- + -graphy. Also "inconsistent but current spellings within a language" (as English, in all ages), 1847.

n. 1 (context countable English) An incorrect spelling; a spelling different from accepted spelling. 2 (context uncountable English) Spelling in which a particular letter represents more than one possible sound.
