The song was produced by Mitch Allan and Jason Evigan of "The Suspex", who co-wrote the song along with Lovato, Sean Douglas, Nikki Williams, and Aaron Phillips. "Heart Attack" is an electropop song that employs cardiac motifs to represent the fear of falling in love. Music critics mostly complimented the lyrical content and Lovato's vocal range.

The song sold 215,000 copies in the U.S in its first week. It peaked at number 10 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, becoming Lovato's second solo top-ten single in the country. It was later certified double platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), having sold two million copies in the United States. "Heart Attack" also attained certifications in other countries, including Canada, Denmark, Sweden, and the United Kingdom.
