Hawthorne

Hawthorne may refer to the American writer Nathaniel Hawthorne. It may also refer to:

Hawthorne (book)

Hawthorne is a book of literary criticism by Henry James published in 1879. The book was an insightful study of James' great predecessor, Nathaniel Hawthorne. James gave extended consideration to each of Hawthorne's novels and a selection of his short stories. He also reviewed Hawthorne's life and some of his nonfiction. The book became somewhat controversial for a famous section where James enumerated the items of novelistic interest he thought were absent from American life.

Hawthorne (Washington, D.C.)

Hawthorne is a neighborhood of 308 single family homes in the Northwest quadrant of Washington, D.C.. "According to neighborhood lore," the subdivision was named for the hawthorn trees once abundant in the area. The neighborhood borders Montgomery County, Maryland, and is bounded by Pinehurst Tributary to the south, Western Avenue to the northwest, and Rock Creek Park to the east.

This neighborhood was originally inhabited by wealthy African Americans, mostly doctors, lawyers, and professors. Most of these families were alumni and faculty of Howard University from 1969 to about 2005. Hawthorne is entirely residential, with no commercial zoning, and is occupied by 1940s-era large split-level and rambler houses on very large parcels. The neighborhood is suburban, separated from the roar of life in the nation's capital.

The area is part of the Chevy Chase Citizens Association and residents consider themselves residents of Chevy Chase. The neighborhood is known for its abundance of mature trees and green space. Most of the neighborhood's housing stock was built in the 1940s. Ranch-style and split-level homes predominate, although there are some Colonial, Cape Cod, and modern-style homes.

Hawthorne students are zoned to Lafayette Elementary School, Alice Deal Middle School, and Woodrow Wilson High School.

Hawthorne (NJT station)

Hawthorne is a rail station on New Jersey Transit's Main Line. It is located in Hawthorne, New Jersey and is one of five stations that serve Passaic County.

The station is situated on a plot of land that is not connected to any main road in Hawthorne. The station's parking lot, ticket machines, and southbound platform are located off of Washington Avenue, while the northbound platform is located off of Vincent Place. A grade crossing on the tracks allows passengers to cross from one platform to the other.

Hawthorne Station is to be one of two terminus points on the proposed Passaic-Bergen Rail Line, a light-rail system that will run from Hawthorne through Paterson, Elmwood Park, and Hackensack.

Hawthorne (NYS&W station)

Hawthorne is a rail station located in Hawthorne, New Jersey in Passaic County. Volunteer Railroaders Association (aka VRA), a non-profit railroad preservation group leases the station from the New York, Susquehanna and Western Railway. The station is single floor wooden structure at grade with the local area. Formerly brown and cream colored, the station has currently been repainted blue-green and red as part of an ongoing restoration. The station once served as the commuter ticket office until June 30, 1966 and was also used as a freight depot building.

The original station at this location was built in 1872. In 1894 a fire destroyed the station and the station was rebuilt in a larger form. Since 1872, the present station has been located on the corner of Royal Avenue and County Route 654 (Diamond Bridge Avenue).

In 2010 the VRA undertook a massive fund raising needed to move the station. The move of just 75 feet within the same plot away from the corner was to alleviate the nearly monthly truck strikes to the southeast roof corner. As a part of this move a concrete brick and poured floor foundation was constructed. The move contractor hired made the move of the station onto the new foundation on September 20, 2010. After the move the areas of deteriorated siding were replaced and adding a new coat of paint was begun. Also added was a deck with safety railing, a fence between the station & the railroad and a garden area in the location of the old station footing.

It is proposed that New Jersey Transit will build a new station for the northern terminus of the Passaic-Bergen Rail Line adjacent to the NJ Transit Main Line's Hawthorne station several blocks away from this station. The neighbourhood of the original Erie mainline station would benefit from state funding to improve signage, lighting and parking.
