Harmane (harman) is a bio-active β-Carboline and monoamine oxidase inhibitor found in coffee and tobacco smoke. Harmane is strongly associated with Essential Tremor, one of the most common neurological diseases in the elderly. It is likely to be the main endogenous ligand for the benzodiazepine receptor. Highest concentrations are found in cooked meat (chicken, beef, pork and fish).
