Graviscalar

In theoretical physics, a graviscalar (also known as a radion) is a hypothetical particle that emerges as an excitation of the metric tensor (i.e. gravitational field) but whose physical properties are virtually indistinguishable from a scalar in four dimensions, as shown in Kaluza–Klein theory. The scalar field ϕ comes from a component of the metric tensor g where the figure 5 labels an additional, fifth dimension. It can be thought of as a measure of the size of the extra dimension, with variations in the scalar field representing variations in the size of the extra dimensions.

In models with multiple extra dimensions, there exist several such particles.

In theories with extended supersymmetry, a graviphoton is usually a superpartner of the graviton that behaves as a particle with spin 1.

This concept is closely related to that of gauged Higgs models.

Usage examples of "graviscalar".

He summoned up the necessary graviphotons and graviscalars and hurled them in a carefully designed pattern at that star.

He understood that the three basic mediating particles of the gravitational interaction between masses were what human scientists of the Kaluza-Klein faith would call the vector bosons—the graviton, the graviphoton, and the graviscalar.

All he had to do was prod at it with a flux of gravitons, graviphotons, and graviscalars, judiciously applied in all the right places, to speed its condensation.

The more useful of those was the spin-0 graviscalar, which pulled matter and energy toward it just as the humble graviton did, but only over finite distances.

Each of the stars involved was dimming slightly—naturally enough, as much of each star’s energy was going into the manufacture of graviscalars rather than radiating away as light and heat.

Each star carried with it its planets, moons, comets, and asteroids, all caught up in the graviscalar sweep.

Five caught the falling thing in a web of graviscalars and lowered it to the surface of Nebo for examination.
