GitLab
Originally "GitLab" referred to a free repository manager. Today, this name can indicate:
- GitLab CE: the software, is a web-based Git repository manager with wiki and issue tracking features, using an open source licence.
- GitLab EE: the software, is based on GitLab CE with additional non-free code, using a commercial licence.
- GitLab.com: the web site, is running GitLab EE, offers hosted accounts similar to GitHub.
- GitLab B.V.: the company.
- GitLab Inc.: the new name of the company.
It is available as an Omnibus package.
The software was written by Dmytro Zaporozhets from Ukraine; the CEO, Sytse Sijbrandij, is based in Utrecht. The code is written in Ruby. As of May 2016, the company has more than 80 salaried employees and more than 1000 open source contributors. It is used by more than 100,000 organizations including Jülich Research Center, NASA, Alibaba, Invincea, O’Reilly Media, Leibniz-Rechenzentrum (LRZ) and CERN.
