Gialousa

Gialousa ( [from , meaning "Holy Sea"]; ) is a town on the Karpass Peninsula, in Cyprus. In 2011, it had a population of 1,774. Gialousa is under the de facto control of Northern Cyprus.

In 1960, the town had 2,538 inhabitants, of whom only one was Turkish Cypriot, the rest being Greek Cypriot. When the Turkish and Turkish Cypriot forces reached the town in August 1974, the Greek inhabitants did not flee. They left the village gradually because of restrictions on freedom of movement and education, and to reunite with family members who were taken as prisoners and ended up in the southern portion of the island, after they were returned. In 1976, the displaced Turkish Cypriots from Erenköy were resettled in the village and it was renamed "Yeni Erenköy" (meaning "New Erenköy").
