game score

n. (context baseball English) A metric used to evaluate the value of a pitcher performance in one game. In a nine-inning game, an average score is 50, and the maximum achievable score is 114.

Game Score is a metric devised by Bill James to determine the strength of a pitcher in any particular baseball game. To determine a starting pitcher's game score:

  1. Start with 50 points.
  2. Add one point for each out recorded, so three points for every complete inning pitched.
  3. Add two points for each inning completed after the fourth.
  4. Add one point for each strikeout.
  5. Subtract two points for each hit allowed.
  6. Subtract four points for each earned run allowed.
  7. Subtract two points for each unearned run allowed.
  8. Subtract one point for each walk.

Usage examples of "game score".

The game score for each player will be the total he has accumulated through all five steps.
