Gabriel

masc. proper name, also name of an Old Testament angel, from Hebrew Gabhri el, literally "man of God," from gebher "man" + El "God." First element is from base of verb gabhar "was strong" (compare Arabic jabr "strong, young man;" jabbar "tyrant"). Gabriel's hounds (17c.) was a folk explanation for the cacophony of wild geese flying over, hidden by clouds or night.

Gabriel (film)

Gabriel is a 2007 Australian action- horror film set in purgatory. It follows the archangel Gabriel's fight to rid purgatory of the evil fallen angels and save the souls of its inhabitants. Gabriel is the first feature directed by Shane Abbess, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Matt Hylton Todd. It stars Andy Whitfield as Gabriel, Dwaine Stevenson as Sammael, Samantha Noble as Amitiel, and Erika Heynatz as Lilith.

As an action movie, Gabriel is unconventional by Australian filmmaking standards. Produced without government funding on a low budget, the filmmakers aimed to create a film that could compete in international markets and become financially profitable. Upon its Australian release on 15 November 2007, Gabriel received mixed reviews and came fifth in its opening week box office. Gabriel was released on DVD in the U.S. on 19 February 2008.

Gabriel (; died after 1164) was a nobleman in the Kingdom of Hungary, who served as Judge royal between 1162 and 1164, during the reign of Stephen III of Hungary.

In 1148, he held the position of Master of the stewards thus he was the first noble who undoubtedly bore the office according to an authentic charter. Gabriel was mentioned as ispán among the great barons in 1157. When the civil war broke out between Stephen III and his uncles ( Ladislaus and Stephen IV) in 1162, he supported the young king. In 1163, Anti-king Stephen IV of Hungary appointed a rival Judge royal Brocca who contested Gabriel's legitimacy.
