"socialist," 1884, from Fabian Society, founded in Britain 1884, named for Quintus Fabius Maximus (surnamed Cunctator "the Delayer"), the cautious tactician who opposed Hannibal in the Second Punic War. The Fabians chose the name to draw a distinction between their slow-going tactics and those of anarchists and communists. The Latin gens name possibly is from faba "a bean."

Fabian is a 1980 West German drama film directed by Wolf Gremm. It is based on the novel Fabian, the Story of a Moralist (1931) by German author Erich Kästner. The film was chosen as West Germany's official submission to the 53rd Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film, but did not manage to receive a nomination.
Fabian is the English form of the late Roman name Fabianus. This was the name given to freed ( emancipated) slaves which originally belonged to a Roman family with the family ( gens= clan) name Fabius, that derived from the Latin faba for the broad bean, an important food crop in the Roman Empire. It entered the English language with the Normans, but has never achieved the popularity of Fabien in France, Fabio or Fabiano in Italy and Fabián in Spain.
