What is "extension field"

n. (context field theory English) A field which contains another field — its "base field" — as its subfield; the ''extension field'' is obtained from its base field by adjoining certain elements to it; these extra elements may be considered to have the effect of making the ''extension field'' behave as if it were a vector space of finite dimension over the base field.
