The beginnings of Tibetan Buddhism, a long evangelisation from India, are divided into a 'First Diffusion' (between AD 627-842), followed by a period of obscurity, and a 'Second Diffusion' (from about 978) which so securely established Buddhism that when its Indian source all but disappeared after 1200 Tibetan Buddhism was able to maintain itself without dependence on renewal from any outside source.
