1590s, from Latin Elysium, from Greek Elysion (pedion) "Elysian field," abode of the blessed after death, where heroes and the virtuous dwell, which is of unknown origin, perhaps from a pre-Greek language. Also used figuratively of a situation of complete happiness.

Elysium or the Elysian Fields (, Ēlýsion pedíon) is a conception of the afterlife that developed over time and was maintained by some Greek religious and philosophical sects and cults. Initially separate from the realm of Hades, admission was reserved for mortals related to the gods and other heroes. Later, it expanded to include those chosen by the gods, the righteous, and the heroic, where they would remain after death, to live a blessed and happy life, and indulging in whatever employment they had enjoyed in life.

The Elysian Fields were, according to Homer, located on the western edge of the Earth by the stream of Okeanos. In the time of the Greek oral poet Hesiod, Elysium would also be known as the Fortunate Isles or the Isles (or Islands) of the Blessed, located in the western ocean at the end of the earth. The Isles of the Blessed would be reduced to a single island by the Thebean poet Pindar, describing it as having shady parks, with residents indulging in athletic and musical pastimes.

The ruler of Elysium varies from author to author: Pindar and Hesiod name Cronus as the ruler, while the poet Homer in the Odyssey describes fair-haired Rhadamanthus dwelling there.

In the Dungeons & Dragons fantasy role-playing game, Elysium, or more fully, the Blessed Fields of Elysium, is a strongly good-aligned plane of existence. It is one of a number of alignment-based Outer Planes that form part of the standard Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) cosmology, used in the Planescape, Greyhawk and some editions of the Forgotten Realms campaign settings.

Elysium is the second studio album from The Velvet Teen. It was first released in Japan on May 22, 2004, and in the US on July 20, 2004. A special edition version of the album was released in Japan only with a bonus DVD. The album was also pressed on double 10" vinyl and released through Pandacide Records in June 2005, featuring a bonus track. Elysium features absolutely no guitars, instead relying on keyboards and string and horn arrangements. Elysium turned out to be the last Velvet Teen album featuring the original line-up of Judah Nagler, Josh Staples and Logan Whitehurst. Logan was diagnosed with brain cancer and left the band shortly before the album's release. Casey Deitz replaced Logan on drums in spring 2004 and for the subsequent tour for the album. Logan Whitehurst died on December 3, 2006.

Elysium is a 2013 American science fiction action thriller film produced, written and directed by Neill Blomkamp. It stars Matt Damon, Jodie Foster, Alice Braga, and Sharlto Copley. The film takes place on both a ravaged Earth, and a luxurious space habitat ( Stanford torus design) called Elysium. The film itself offers deliberate social commentary which explores political and sociological themes such as immigration, overpopulation, health care, worker exploitation, the justice system, and social class issues. The film was released on , 2013 by TriStar Pictures, in both conventional and IMAX Digital theaters. It was a modest success and received generally positive reviews from critics, even though many considered it a disappointment after Blomkamp's first film District 9. Elysium was released on DVD and Blu-ray discs in Region 1 on December 17, 2013.

Elysium (also known as 54 Clarke) is an approved residential skyscraper to be located in the Southbank precinct of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.

The project was developed by the Melbourne-based Matrix & Cube group and designed by BKK Architects. Rising to a height of 243.8 metres (800 feet), Elysium will contain up to 288 residential apartments, across 75 levels, making it one of the tallest buildings in Melbourne. The design is notable for its slender appearance – a width of 12 metres (39 feet) at its narrowest – which has earned it a reputation for being one of the "skinniest skyscraper [proposals]" in Melbourne.

First proposed in 2011, the development on 54-56 Clarke Street received approval twice in 2013 by then-Planning Minister Matthew Guy; initially in February, 2013, which was later challenged through Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT), and then subsequently in December, 2013. A construction time-frame is yet to be announced.
