--Bp. Hall.

Douglas Harper's Etymology Dictionary
dilation

1590s, formed from dilate on the mistaken assumption that the -ate in that word was the Latin verbal suffix (it is instead part of the stem); the proper form, dilatation, is older (c.1400).

Dilation (or dilatation) may refer to:

Dilation (morphology)

Dilation is one of the basic operations in mathematical morphology. Originally developed for binary images, it has been expanded first to grayscale images, and then to complete lattices. The dilation operation usually uses a structuring element for probing and expanding the shapes contained in the input image.

Dilation (metric space)

In mathematics, a dilation is a function f from a metric space into itself that satisfies the identity

d(f(x), f(y)) = rd(x, y)
for all points (x, y), where d(x, y) is the distance from x to y and r is some positive real number.

In Euclidean space, such a dilation is a similarity of the space. Dilations change the size but not the shape of an object or figure.

Every dilation of a Euclidean space that is not a congruence has a unique fixed point that is called the center of dilation. Some congruences have fixed points and others do not.

Dilation (operator theory)

In operator theory, a dilation of an operator T on a Hilbert space H is an operator on a larger Hilbert space K, whose restriction to H composed with the orthogonal projection onto H is T.

More formally, let T be a bounded operator on some Hilbert space H, and H be a subspace of a larger Hilbert space '' H' ''. A bounded operator V on '' H' '' is a dilation of T if

PV∣ = T

where P is an orthogonal projection on H.

V is said to be a unitary dilation (respectively, normal, isometric, etc.) if V is unitary (respectively, normal, isometric, etc.). T is said to be a compression of V. If an operator T has a spectral set X, we say that V is a normal boundary dilation or a normal ∂X dilation if V is a normal dilation of T and σ(V) ∈ ∂X.

Some texts impose an additional condition. Namely, that a dilation satisfy the following (calculus) property:

Pf(V)∣ = f(T)

where f(T) is some specified functional calculus (for example, the polynomial or H calculus). The utility of a dilation is that it allows the "lifting" of objects associated to T to the level of V, where the lifted objects may have nicer properties. See, for example, the commutant lifting theorem.

Dilation (album)

Dilation is the debut album by comedian Rory Scovel released digitally on October 4, 2011 by Stand Up! Records.

When the dilation ended and the Universe began to converge centripetally, gradually, in that blue phase, there resulted enormous temperatures and increasingly hard radiation, which destroyed all the living matter that in the course of the preceding two billion-years had succeeded in covering the planets.

They could no longer manage their balloon, which went whirling round and round in contending currents, and refused to obey the different dilations of the gas.

Hence you'd have the compound effect of both dilations added together.

The time dilations involved were such that once they left, there wasn't much point in going home again.

You can still find claims that time dilation applies to watches and elementary particles-and, presumably, to circadian and other rhythms in plants, animals, and microbes-but not to human biological clocks.
