Dikwal

Dikwal is a village in Malvan Taluka of district Sindhudurg, Maharashtra, India were unknown cool, quite and beautiful historical area surrounded by hills on three sides, and about from the Arabian Sea. Total area covered about 560 hectare as per Record. It is owned by the Gawade family, who are known as Gaonkar ("owner of village"). The Gawade family settled here from the village of Chowke and prior to that had come from the Gauda district of Karnataka. Local spoken language is Malvani.

DIKWAL: It is learnt from old aged people, says, This village has more water area, so it was muddy, where while walking in this area mud used to stick to legs bottom and hence area was introduced as 'Dik' means gum (Sticky glue) and 'Wal' means Wet. In this way area is popular as Dik-wal i.e. Dikwal.

As per old and official record, Village Dikwal had plenty of plants called 'Dinda', called in local language. In this Village before the Temple of Local deity God 'Gangeshwar', where villagers traditionally used to play a game, on every 'New Moon Day' called 'Bhavai'. They used to dug deep in soil where a man sit with a coconut in his hand and others were taken away or snatched away and then go for wash on stream. Then again they come back to play a game, the part of starting God rituals, called 'Dindwal' (A game played with the stick of 'Dinda') Group of those trees (forest) were called 'Dindwan' means Jungle of Dinda. So this way 'Dindwal' becomes 'Dikwal'

Villagers residing in this village are all farmers. Full day work in farm for their daily needs. Rice is a primary crop and supporting crops are taken with gardening i.e. Plantation. Most of them are working at city like Mumbai, Pune, Delhi etc. Some of them are doing business. Most of them visit to their native place in the month of May. This is a month of Hot Summer when in India is holiday for school students.

In the month of December they perform God worship Festival called 'Dahikalo'. On this occasion all villagers come together to enjoy celebration. 'Dahikalo' is a Drama based on happenings in the life of god. Different stories performed in the front of Temple on Permanent Stage built for this purpose here in this village Dikwal.

Education is also one of the reason which make them to settle in city. Here in Dikwal nearest market is Katta on the way to Malwan via Kasal too. Walking distance is about more than One and half hours. School at Dikwal is up to 4th standard. After that for next study students walk towards katta. At katta they can study up to twelfth standard.

Village started developing since 1971 since when government started lookafter with the efforts of villagers. Villagers are able to build roads which helped to develop transport facilities. Now students can go to school with State Transport Bus (MSRTC).

Nearest Railway Station is Sindhudurg situated on the route of Konkan Railway. This station area is also known as Oras. Oras is the city near Sindhudurg Station.
