Daikundi (Hazara tribe)

Daikundi is one of the major tribes of the Hazaras of Hazarajat, located in central Afghanistan. They live in Daikundi Province and the Lal Wa Sarjangal,Chagceran, Daulatabad, Charsada and Pasaband Districts of Ghor province. Daikundis remained secluded and unhinged from the devastation and the resulting uprooting of different Hazara tribes, after the Battle of Uruzgan.

The Daikundi have traditionally been very closely allied with the Dai Zangi. Subsets of the Daikundi include the Ainak, Alak, Babuli, Baibagh, Barat, Bubak, Chahkuk, Chahush, Chora, Daulat Beg, Doda, Fihristan, Haider Beg, Jami, Jasha, Kalanzai, Kaum-i-Ali, Khudi, Khushak, Mamaka, Mir Hazar, Neka, Roshan Beg, and Saru.

Daikundi Province was created from the upper half of the Uruzgan province of Afghanistan in 2004. It partially fulfilled the Hazara people demand that their land URUZGAN be restored back to them. In Uruzgan the Hazaras were uprooted after the "battle of Uruzgan" and pashtun tribes were sattled on those land. Uruzgan and the battle of Uruzgan has a historical significance as it was the point that the Hazaras lost their independence and were forcefully incorporated in Afghanistan against their wishes. The process for return of Uruzgan had been an old agenda of the Hazara political struggle. During the communist rule Dr. Najib Ullah agreed to some sort of settlement, however it remained unfulfilled. After the return of democracy the Hazaras intensified their efforts and got the Hazara majority areas as new provence of Daikundi in 2004. The Battle of Uruzgan was fought at the battlefield of "Gizao" (Gizab) in present-day Daikundi.
