Lumpfish \Lump"fish`\, n. [From Lump, on account of its bulkiness: cf. G. & D. lump, F. lompe.] (Zo["o]l.) A large, thick, clumsy, marine fish ( Cyclopterus lumpus) of Europe and America. The color is usually translucent sea green, sometimes purplish. It has a dorsal row of spiny tubercles, and three rows on each side, but has no scales. The ventral fins unite and form a ventral sucker for adhesion to stones and seaweeds. Called also lumpsucker, cock-paddle, sea owl.

Cyclopterus \Cyclopterus\ n. the type genus of the Cyclopteridae, consisting of lumpfishes. It includes Cyclopterus lumpus of the North Atlantic.

Cyclopterus lumpus, the lumpsucker or lumpfish, is a species of marine fish in the family Cyclopteridae (lumpsuckers). It is the only member of the genus Cyclopterus. It is found in the North Atlantic and adjacent parts of the Arctic Ocean, ranging as far south as Chesapeake Bay (rare south of New Jersey) on the North American coast and Spain on the European coast.
