Courtnay made his first-class debut for Godalming against the Marylebone Cricket Club at Lord's in 1825. In this match, Courtnay was dismissed for a duck by Lord Frederick Beauclerk, while in their second-innings he was dismissed for 14 runs, though the bowler who took his wicket is not recorded. The Marylebone Cricket Club won by 65 runs. The following year he another first-class appearance, this time for Sussex against a combined Hampshire and Surrey team at Petworth Park. Courtnay scored 3 runs in Sussex's first-innings, though which bowler took his wicket is not recorded. In their second-innings wasn't required to bat, with Sussex winning the match by 9 wickets.
