Copitalism is a neologism that describes a political ruling system in which the government uses direct executive force in order to enforce capitalistic practices and methodologies which are in favor of major multinational corporations. The term derives from the mix of the words cop which means police officer and capitalism. The term "copitalism" has neither been coined by academics, nor is it officially used in any research field. It was possibly created as a result of the police state phenomenon increasingly appearing around the world to serve and protect the interest and activities of organizations acting purely on capitalistic motivation.
The term should not be confused with corporatism (or corporatocracy) because it describes the direct actions of a totalitarian state that uses excessive physical violence against people to impose terms, often against the letter of law, that ensure the interests of capitalism. The term was used in a political discussion at an on line forum about practices of the government in Greece.
An example of this kind of copitalistic activity is the incidents at Skouries, Halkidiki in Greece. People living in Skouries opposed at the mining activities for gold in the area by Eldorado Gold. As it has been stated by the Prime Minister of Greece, Antonis Samaras at an interview in Wall Street Journal, "This kind of act cannot be tolerated. Greece is a modern European country, and we will at all costs protect foreign investment in the country".
