ConTextos

ConTextos prepares students in El Salvador to be critical thinkers capable of confronting the region’s most urgent problems.

ConTextos, an NGO established in El Salvador and the USA, transforms the quality of education in El Salvador so that students go beyond mechanical learning to develop authentic literacy skills such as deep-thinking, interpretation, analysis and creativity. They do this through an innovative teacher-training program, the creation of libraries, a unique writing program that incorporates tablet technology, and diverse partnerships.

The organization, founded by students at Harvard Graduate School of Education in 2009, was originally named Learning Through Libraries (LTL) and later renamed to its current title, ConTextos. The organization works in collaboration with local communities, private partner organizations such as Avianca and Lectorum and governments. ConTextos delivers books to schools so that students may become engaged learners and problem-solvers.

The executive director of ConTextos, Debra Gittler, was named a 2013 Global Fellow by Echoing Green, an early-stage social sector investor. In 2014, ConTextos' work was featured on WBEZ, a public radio station in the Chicago area.
