The name Colosimo being formed from two words, 'Colosi' and 'mo'. Colosi, or more specifically, Colossi (of ancient Greek derivation) being the plural of Colossus, meaning person of enormous importance or ability. 'Mo' being used in Southern Italy to mean 'as' or 'for a long period of time'. Thus it may be speculated that the meaning of the name Colosimo is 'people of enormous importance or ability for a long period of time'. It is known that the philosopher and mathematician Pythagoras settled in Crotone (then called Kroton) where he created an Order called the Order of Pythagoras and also known as the Pythagoreans. Colosimi is approximately a day's walk from Crotone and so it may speculated that the place was named because it was the true home of Pythagoras and / or the Pythagoreans given their enormous importance and ability.
