The Collaborative International Dictionary
Codon

Codon \Co"don\ (k[=o]"d[o^]n), n. (Molecular biology) a sequence of three nucleotides in a genome or a DNA or messenger RNA molecule, which specifies the incorporation of one amino acid or is a stop signal, during the biosynthesis of proteins. Codons occur within the protein-coding segments of the DNA or RNA genome of living organisms. The amino acid sequence of proteins synthesized on ribosomes is thus determined by the sequence of the nucleotides in the genome.

Note: Outside of coding regions, there is no direct correspondence of the nucleotide sequence with protein sequence, and certain signalling functions of nucleic acids are not specified by three-nucleotide codons. Certain types of polypeptide synthesized in living organisms are not synthesized on ribosomes, and the sequences of these polypeptides do not have a corresponding nucleotide sequence in the genome.

Douglas Harper's Etymology Dictionary
codon

1962, from code (n.) + -on.

Wiktionary
codon

n. (context biochemistry English) A sequence of three adjacent nucleotides, which encode for a specific amino acid during protein synthesis, or translation. Three special codons, called "stop codons," signal protein synthesis to terminate.

Usage examples of "codon".

The self-system, in other words, is the regime or codon of the human holon, and like all regimes, it is the opening or clearing in which correlative holons can manifest: it is Emptiness looking out through a separate self until that self simply reverts to Emptiness per se.

With the codon writer, we will make a diploid set of chromosomes combining deoxyribonucleic acid from both of you.

Code redundancy may favor an in vitro method of determining codon assignments over analyses of base and polypetide sequences.

Ressler tries again to interest them in in vitro, but these three refuse to concede that the codon catalog is arbitrary, devoid of internal order.

Then, if chance favors, the simple laboratory technique for determining codon assignments, the leverage so agonizingly close that he can close his eyes and see it in the phosphene tracers on his lids.

The four codons for threonine in their RNA coding are ACU, ACC, ACA, and ACG.

Your natural haploid set of chromosomes would be vacuumed out of it, and a doctor would add in a full diploid set of chromosomes created using the codon writer.

The words in which the instructions are written are called codons, and the letters are known as bases.

Drawing their attention to the screen again, he pointed out whatever random codons passed across the display as he moved through the readings.

The four codons for threonine in their RNA coding are ACU, ACC, ACA, and ACG.

Stein is aware, Trenae, that each of these amino acids has a certain number of codons to represent itself.

By the order of the amino acids I wrote, the number of possible codons for each would be 6, 2, 2, 4, 4, 2, and 6 respectively.

Laying DNA codons in an endless chain, Lysos hummed sweetly as she worked.
