CHYDARU, also known the Chapel Hill Youth Development and Research Unit or the Chapel Hill Youth Detention and Rehabilitation Unit is an experimental youth prison operated by the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Built in 1945, the facility was used for an unknown purpose until it opened as a prison for youth under the age of 18 on May 4, 1964. It closed later in 1965 due to budget shortages. Sometime during the 1970s it housed the Bureau of School Services, which was operated by UNC. Later in 1975, it was repurposed to store radioactive waste until it is considered no longer radioactive and then incinerated at a separate location. It is inspected annually by the government to monitor the radioactive waste.
