Cheranallur or Cheranellore or Cheranelloor is a northern suburb of Cochin city in the state of Kerala, India and lies on the banks of the Periyar River. According to tradition, the area was named by its earlier inhabitants who found this place very fertile and beautiful. The name in its local language Malayalam means "Good place to join".
The National Highway 17(New Number NH 66), which connects Cochin with Mumbai- Panvel, goes through Cheranalloor crossing the Vallarpadam International Container National Highway National Highway 47C (India) (the only junction between the two Highways). Cheranallur is a place surrounded by backwaters, and brackish lagoons which are commonplace in Kerala. The former ruler of these area was known as "Cheranallor Karthavu" - he was one of the influential lords around Cochin area before the Sakthan Thampuran of Cochin.
