Chaveña

La Chaveña is a neighborhood of Ciudad Juárez. La Chaveña is on the north-west side of the city. It is one of the oldest neighbourhoods in the city, with over 100 years.

La Chaveña is a working-class neighbourhood, and it is characterized by the hundred of discount shops known as los Cerrajeros located in the area, specifically on the Revolución strip, where customers and merchants bargain in the most traditional market fashion for the price of products and services.

It is also the location of two emblematic landscapes of Ciudad Juárez. First, the primary school Revolución, inaugurated in 1939 by Lázaro Cárdenas del Río, President of Mexico (from 1934 to 1940). Secondly, ‘la pila de la Chaveña’ which is a font (pila) that was built around the 1890s, and later was replaced with the fountain that currently is located in the middle of the plaza. The “pila de la Chaveña” is a public space that Juarenses known as a meeting point.
