Chandrahasa was the king of Kuntala kingdom which roughly consisted of parts of north of present-day Karnataka and south of Maharashtra, India, including Gokarna region. Sometimes an overlapping region Gorashtra is mentioned to be part of Kuntala. The story of Chandrahasa is mentioned in Ashvamedhika Parva of the epic Mahabharata. He was the son of the king Sudharmika of Kerala. He married Vishaye and Champakamalini who was the princess of Kuntala. They had two sons Makaraksha and Padmaksha. Chandrahasa befriends Arjuna who was accompanied by Krishna guarding the Ashvamedha horse of Yudhishthira. Chandrahasa anoints his son Makaraksha as king and acomapnies the army of Arjuna to help Ashvamedha.
The story of Chandrahasa is also depicted in the Kannada epic Jaimini Bharatha of poet Lakshmeesha. The popular story of the prince Chandrahasa is played in popular movies and in Yakshagana.
Chandrahasa is a 1933 Hindi mythological costume drama film directed by Sarvottam Badami. It was the first Hindi film directed by Badami bringing him into prominence, even though he did not know Hindi. It was also one of the first Talkie versions of the film which was remade several times. Produced by Sagar Movietone, it had music composed by S. P. Rane. The film starred Noor Mohammed Charlie, Gulzar, Kamala, Master Bachchu, Dinkar, Mehboob Khan and Baburao Sansare.
The film was not a comedy in spite of Charlie, a well-known comedian acting in this film, Badami went on to be recognised later for his satirical comedies.
The story is about a young man Chandrahasa, whom an evil Minister is trying to kill. A princess helps Chandrahasa, falling in love with him in the process.
Chandrahasa (Kannada: ಚಂದ್ರಹಾಸ) is a 1965 Indian Kannada film, directed by B. S. Ranga and produced by B. S. Ranga. The film stars Rajkumar, Udaykumar, K. S. Ashwath and Narasimharaju in lead roles. The film had musical score by S. Hanumantha Rao. Jayanthi had a guest appearance in the climax of this movie as Goddess Kaali and Rajkumar sings Maata marakadashshaami maatange madhushaalini in her praise.
