Cariama cristata

Seriema \Ser`i*e"ma\, n. [Native name.] (Zo["o]l.) either of two large South American birds related to the cranes, the cariama of Southern Brazil ( Cariama cristata, formerly Dicholophus cristata) or the Chunga burmeisteri of Argentina. They have an erectile crest and a short, broad bill. They are often domesticated.

A large, long-legged cranelike South American wading bird ( Cariama cristata, formerly Dicholophus cristatus) which preys upon snakes, etc.; it is also called the seriema, but that latter name is also applied to another South American bird. See Seriema.
