CareKit

CareKit is an SDK (Software Development Kit) offered by Apple Inc. to mobile app developers. This is an open-source framework released on March 21, 2016. The applications developed with the framework will be compatible with iOS and watchOS operating systems.

Unlike HealthKit and ResearchKit, the previously launched SDKs that targeted fitness wearable OEMs and healthcare industry, CareKit focuses on consumers. Apps developed through CareKit will help consumers to stay informed about their health, symptoms, and medication plans as advised by their healthcare professionals. The data can be shared with healthcare services provider as well to make treatment effective.

CareKit Modules

CareKit is available in four modules: Care Card, Symptom and Measurement Tracker, Insight Dashboard and Connect.

Care Card: This empowers the apps to track the progress of care plans such as taking medication or completing recommended exercises. Fitness trackers bearing sensors compatible with Apple Watch and iPhone will be required.

Symptom and Measurement Tracker: This can be used to build apps that can monitor and record symptoms, like temperature, shivering, uneasiness, fatigue, etc.

Insight Dashboard: This enables the app to actively map the symptoms observed with the details captured through the Care Card. Thus, users can stay in the know that how the treatment or medication is helping with the recovery.

Connect: Information gained so can be used to communicate with doctors, care teams or family members.
