Canoeing is a sport or recreational activity which involves paddling a canoe with a single-bladed paddle. In some parts of Europe canoeing refers to both canoeing and kayaking, with a canoe being called a Canadian canoe.
An ancient mode of transportation, modern canoeing was established in the late 19th century. In 1924, canoeing associations from Austria, Germany, Denmark and Sweden founded the Internationalen Representation for Kanusport, forerunner of the International Canoe Federation. Canoeing became part of the Olympic Games at the 1936 Summer Olympics.
The main form of competitive sport was sprint canoe. Others include canoe polo, whitewater canoeing, canoe marathon, ICF canoe marathon, and playboating. National canoe associations include the American, Canadian, British, Scottish, and Welsh.
A recreational form of canoeing is canoe camping.
There are various types of canoeing differentiated on the basis of canoe and its features. Here are some of the different types of canoes:
Recreational Canoes: These are the most widely used canoes because of its light weight and durability. The material used for making these types of canoe is usually aluminium or plastic as its light is weight and reasonably strong. You can easily find recreational canoes at most sporting goods store or at your nearest lake on rent.
Intermediate or Advanced Canoes: These canoes are improved version of the standard canoes offering more comfort and better speeds. These are designed for the canoeing enthusiast who can use it for fishing or bird-watching.
Whitewater Canoes: These canoes are perfectly engineered and crafted for whitewater and river paddling. They offer better safety as you allow you to tie floatation bags which prevents the boat from sinking if it flips or takes water accidentally. They have higher sides which are also helpful in preventing water from entering into the boat. It is easier to turn these canoes sharply because of flat bottom.
Racing Canoes: These canoes are strictly designed for the professionals and sporting activities related to canoeing like racing. They are made of special materials like Kevlar, fiberglass or composite, that makes these canoes ultra-light weighted and super strong. They have different design from other canoes with narrower beams and closed decks for better tracking. These are classified into two groups: flatwater and whitewater racing canoes.
