What is "canarie"

CANARIE manages and evolves components of digital research infrastructure for Canada's research, education and innovation communities. CANARIE is a non-profit corporation, founded in 1993, and receives the majority of its funding from the Government of Canada. CANARIE operates and evolves the national backbone network of Canada's National Research and Education Network (NREN). CANARIE also supports the development of research software tools; provides cloud resources for startups and small businesses; provides access and identity management services; and supports the development of policies, infrastructure and tools for research data management.

The company name was originally an acronym for Canadian Network for the Advancement of Research, Industry and Education. The acronym is no longer used.
