Birdland (The Yardbirds album)

Birdland is a 2003 studio album by English blues rock band The Yardbirds. The album was the first Yardbirds release in over 35 years; however, the only original 1960s era Yardbirds members are drummer Jim McCarty and rhythm guitarist Chris Dreja. ( Jeff Beck does make a guest appearance on "My Blind Life"). New members are John Idan, Gypie Mayo and Alan Glen. Several notable guitarists appear throughout the record, including Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Slash, Johnny Rzeznik, Jeff "Skunk" Baxter, and Brian May.

The album contains seven new tracks composed mostly by McCarty or Dreja, and eight remakes of Yardbirds songs from the 1960s. The song "An Original Man (A Song for Keith)" was dedicated to The Yardbirds' original lead singer, Keith Relf, who died in 1976.

Birdland (instrumental composition)

"Birdland" is a jazz-fusion instrumental composition written by keyboardist Joe Zawinul of Weather Report. The piece made its debut on Weather Report’s 1977 studio album, Heavy Weather. With "Birdland" at the helm of the album, the song received awards, as well as ranking high on Billboard charts. It became a jazz standard, and entered the set lists of other artists including Buddy Rich, Maynard Ferguson’s big band, The Manhattan Transfer (whose version added lyrics by Jon Hendricks), Quincy Jones, Niacin and The String Cheese Incident.

Birdland (New York jazz club)

Birdland is a jazz club started in New York City on December 15, 1949. The original Birdland, which was located at 1678 Broadway, just north of West 52nd Street in Manhattan, was closed in 1965 due to increased rents, but it re-opened for one night in 1979. A revival began in 1986 with the opening of the second nightclub by the same name that is now located in Manhattan's Theater District, not far from the original nightclub's location. The current location is in the building next to The New York Observer headquarters.

Birdland (Hamburg jazz club)

Birdland was a jazz club in Hamburg. The basement club was located in the Eimsbüttel district on Gärtnerstraße. It was opened in 1985 by Dieter Reichert. The club was supported by Jazz Federation Hamburg e.V which organized the events and allowed its members to attend performances free of charge. The club accommodated audiences of 150 with seating for some 110. It has been described as "much-needed addition to Hamburg's catalogue of venues for international and home-grown stars."

Birdland's programmes covered Swing, Mainstream, Bebop, Latin and Modern Jazz, anything from Dixieland to Avant-garde jazz. Only live music was played. There were concerts several times a week. Once a week there was a jam session, in which beginners and music students played together with recognized jazz artists when they happened to be on tour. Once a month there was a vocal session.

The musicians who appeared at Birdland include Chet Baker, Johnny Griffin, Joe Henderson, Art Blakey, Ray Brown, Diana Krall, Tommy Flanagan, Brad Mehldau, Viktoria Tolstoy, Rebekka Bakken, and the brothers Branford and Wynton Marsalis. Recordings of performances at Birdland have been released on the ACT and Nagel-Heyer Records labels.

The club closed on 30 June 2013. And reopened on 2 October 2014.
