Billa (supermarket)

BILLA is a European supermarket chain originating in Austria, a market where the brand maintains its largest presence with more than 1000 stores. The company, which was founded by Karl Wlaschek in 1953, is currently owned by Germany's REWE Group.

The supermarkets' name is derived from a contraction of BILliger LAden, German for 'inexpensive shop'

Billa is a 1980 Indian Tamil-language crime film produced by K. Balaji and directed by R. Krishnamurthy. The film stars Rajinikanth, K. Balaji, Thengai Srinivasan, Manorama, Sripriya, Reena Roy and Major Sundarrajan. The film revolves around Billa (Rajinikanth), a feared Mafia don in Madras, who is fatally wounded during an encounter with the police. Wanting to uncover Billa's accomplices, the police commissioner Alexander (K. Balaji) trains a lookalike village bumpkin Rajappa (also Rajinikanth) to pose as Billa and infiltrate the gang. The rest of the film deals with how Rajappa learns more about Billa's gang, and tries to get all of them arrested. Billa was released on 26 January 1980, to commercial success.

Billa is a 2007 Indian Tamil gangster- thriller film directed by Vishnuvardhan. It is based on the 1980 Billa (1980 film). Ajith Kumar and Nayantara played the lead roles while Prabhu Ganesan, Namitha, Rahman, Adithya Menon and Santhanam were also part of the cast. The film was produced by L. Suresh, while featuring musical score and soundtrack by Yuvan Shankar Raja, cinematography by Nirav Shah and editing by A. Sreekar Prasad.

The project commenced in April 2007 and was released and distributed worldwide by Ayngaran International on 14 December 2007. The film, upon release, emerged a high financial success, and was selected to be screened at the 61st Cannes Film Festival.
