Bifarious

Bifarious \Bi*fa"ri*ous\, a. [L. bifarius; bis twice + fari to speak. Cf. Gr. ? twofold; ? twice + ? to say.]

  1. Twofold; arranged in two rows.

  2. (Bot.) Pointing two ways, as leaves that grow only on opposite sides of a branch; in two vertical rows.

1650s, from Latin bifarius "twofold, double," probably originally "that which can be expressed in two ways" [Klein], from bi- (see bi-) + fari "to speak, say" (see fame (n.)). Related: Bifariously.
