The Bhatti Rajputs of Northern India who migrated to the South were referred to as Bhatta Rajulu in the Telugu diaspora. The members of this caste were also referred to as Bhatmurtis, Bhatwandulu or simply Bhats.
Another parallel legend from the Kakatiya chronicles describes King Pratapa Rudra (1295 - 1323) luring Brahmins to conduct ceremonies in the household of Velama chiefs whos exact caste were unknown as they came from North to seek refuge in his kingdom. The group of Brahmins who had performed the sacrificial ceremonies against established dharma were excommunicated to form the new order, the Bhats.
The Bhatrajus wear the sacred thread like the Brahmins and are well versed in sacred literature. They call themselves Rajus (Rajputs) claiming half-decent from ancient Kshatriya clans.
