Bestha in Kannada means 'the one who catches fish' or ' fisherman.' Each village of Karnataka, modern-day Telangana's neighboring state, used to have groups of people assigned to the job of catching fish. These people were called as Bestharu. They were especially populous in costal Karnataka, as well as by the rivers. Recently, however, the people within this community have chosen many other varied professions. Great strides have also been made in education in the community.
