Berneval

Alexandre de Berneval, architect, died in 1440, was one of the foremost masons in Normandy in the early 15th century.

He was responsible for the south rose window of the abbey church of Saint-Ouen in Rouen, which contains his tomb, as well as (probably) the south transept porch ('Portail des Marmousets'), in Gothic Style Flamboyant. He is also known to have worked for the abbey of Fécamp from 1420 onwards and on the castle of Rouen, no longer extant.

He is known to have visited England, buying alabaster from Thomas Prentys in Chellaston, Derbyshire. (Source: Grove Dictionary of Art)
