Old English beneoðan "beneath, under, below," from be- "by" + neoðan "below," originally "from below," from Proto-Germanic *niþar "lower, farther down, down" (see nether). Meaning "unworthy of" is attested from 1849 (purists prefer below in this sense). "The be- gave or emphasized the notion of 'where,' excluding that of 'whence' pertaining to the simple niðan" [OED].

Beneath (2007 film)

Beneath is a straight-to-DVD thriller- horror film co-produced in a first time partnership between Paramount Classics (a Viacom subsidiary) and MTV Films (although both co-purchased the rights to Hustle & Flow in 2005). The film is directed by the newcomer Dagen Merrill, who co-wrote the script with Kevin Burke, and the list of producers include Sean Covel and Chris Wyatt ( Napoleon Dynamite, Think Tank), as well as Troy Craig Poon. In Paramount Classics's first horror movie, which marks the company's expansion from acquisitions into the production arena, the cast includes Nora Zehetner ( Brick, May, R.S.V.P., Everwood) and Matthew Settle ( U-571, Band of Brothers). Shooting started 2005 in Vancouver, the film was released on DVD August 7, 2007. It was the first direct-to-video title produced by MTV Films.

Beneath is produced by Janne Saksa & Ben Varon. It is recorded by Janne Saksa and Amoral at Sound Supreme Studios, Hämeenlinna(FI) in February 2011. Beneath is a 2013 horror film directed by Larry Fessenden. The film had its world premiere at the Stanley Film Festival on May 3, 2013 and later aired on the Chiller channel. Beneath stars Daniel Zovatto, Bonnie Dennison, and Chris Conroy as teenagers that must fight for their lives against man-eating fish.

A digital comic based upon the movie was released in July 2013. The comic, also titled Beneath, explores the backstory behind the catfish and details another group that the giant fish attacked in the 1960s.
