Balderdash \Bal"der*dash\, n. [Of uncertain origin: cf. Dan. balder noise, clatter, and E. dash; hence, perhaps, unmeaning noise, then hodgepodge, mixture; or W. baldorduss a prattling, baldordd, baldorddi, to prattle.]

1590s, of unknown origin; originally a jumbled mix of liquors (milk and beer, beer and wine, etc.), transferred 1670s to "senseless jumble of words." From dash; first element perhaps cognate with Danish balder "noise, clatter" (see boulder).

Balderdash is a board game of bluffing and trivia created by Laura Robinson and Paul Toyne, of Toronto, Ontario Canada. The game was first released in 1984, under Canada Games. It was later picked up by a U.S company, The Games Gang, and eventually became the property of Hasbro, and finally Mattel. The game is based on a classic parlor game called Fictionary. The game has sold over 15 million copies worldwide to date. It is aimed at fans of word games, such as Scrabble.

Balderdash is an American television panel game show that aired on PAX TV from August 2, 2004 to October 8, 2004 with repeats airing until April 22. It was hosted by Elayne Boosler and announced by John Moschitta. The game was based on the board game of the same name.
