Azariah

Azariah (, meaning "Yah['s] help[ed]"; ) is the name of several people in the Hebrew Bible and Jewish history, including:

  • Abednego, the new name given to Azariah who is the companion of Daniel, Hananiah, and Mishael in the Book of Daniel
  • Azariah (guardian angel), the subject of the " Book of Azariah" by Maria Valtorta; the name given Raphael as companion of Tobias in the book of Tobit
  • Azariah (prophet), a prophet
  • Azariah (high priest) high priest of Israel
  • Azariah II, another high priest, in the reign of Uzziah
  • Eleazar ben Azariah, the Mishnaic sage
  • Uzziah, King of Judah, also known as Azariah
Azariah (prophet)

Azariah was a prophet described in 2 Chronicles 15. The Spirit of God is described as coming upon him (verse 1), and he goes to meet King Asa of Judah to exhort him to carry out a work of reform. Azariah is described as being the "son of Oded" (verse 1), but the Masoretic Text omits Azariah's name in verse 8, suggesting that the prophecy is from Oded himself.

Azariah (high priest)

Azariah (Hebrew - עזריהו `aZaRYaHOo "God Helped") was the third High Priest after Zadok. C.f. , where he is called "son of Zadok", although he is elsewhere identified as the son of Ahimaaz . Although his name appears in the list of the Zadokite family (, 6:4-15 in other translations) there is no direct evidence in the Bible that he was a High Priest. Azariah (Azarias) does appear on the list of High Priests by Josephus. According to the Book of Chronicles, Azariah was believed to have been a priest that served at King Solomon's Temple.
