ArtPrize

ArtPrize is an international art competition held in Grand Rapids, Michigan. 2014 marked ArtPrize's sixth competition which took place September 24 - October 12, 2014. The first ArtPrize competition took place between September 23 and October 10, 2009, and has occurred annually during similar periods of time.

ArtPrize is unusual both for the large size of the top prize ($200,000, combined with other prizes cumulatively amounting to $560,000), as well as for the method of judging entries.

Unlike traditionally juried competitions, ArtPrize contestants are juried by the public. Artists and venues (exhibition locations) negotiate and coordinate during a process called Connections. During the event, installations are voted upon by the public using modern networking technology.

In 2010, ArtPrize formally added categories for traditional juried work, including two-dimensional, three-dimensional, use of urban space, time/performance and sustainability. Since then, the juried awards have increased in prize amount, with the top category prizes valued at $20,000 and a new Juried Grand Prize of $100,000.

In 2014 the prize structure was altered to include three $20,000 category prizes plus a $200,000 grand prize for the public vote. The juried vote includes five $20,000 category prizes plus a $200,000 grand prize.
