Around the World is Mariah Carey's fifth VHS/ DVD home video release. The DVD showcases Carey traveling around the world as she explores and performs in various locations such as New York, and on her Butterfly World Tour in Hawaii, Japan, Taiwan and Australia. The DVD was released in April 1999.
Like the television special, which premiered in late 1998 on UPN, the DVD uses edited performances of songs. Many songs were edited down to half their length (by discarding the second verse and choruses). The songs so abbreviated include " Emotions", " Dreamlover", " My All", " I'll Be There", and "Whenever You Call". Other songs are not edited, as " Fantasy", " I Still Believe", " Honey", and " Hero" are more or less kept to their original length. The performance of "Hero" on this program is derived from three separate live performances.
The DVD also shows lengthy behind-the-scenes footage including scenes showing Carey exploring Japan, Hawaii, and Australia. Footage is also shown in New York as Carey goes to attend a party thrown for her #1's album, and as she shares deep conversations with her former employer, Brenda K. Starr. A cover of the hit song " Hopelessly Devoted to You" from the movie Grease is also performed with the song's original singer, Olivia Newton-John. As an added bonus of sorts, the music videos for the singles " Butterfly", " Breakdown", " The Roof (Back in Time)", and "My All" are included on the DVD.

"Around the World (La La La La La)" is the debut single by German Eurodance group ATC (also known as A Touch of Class). The song is a cover of the Russian hit " Pesenka" (in Russian: Песенка 'A song') (sometimes commonly known as "Pesenka (La La La)" by Ruki Vverh! (in Russian: Руки Вверх!) and uses the melody of Pesenka with additional English lyrics. The original Russian hit was written by Ruki Vverh! band members Sergey Zhukov and Aleksey Potehin and appeared in the Russian band's 1998 album Sdelai pogromche! (in Russian: Сделай погромче!).
"Around the World (La La La La La)" was first released as ATC's debut single from their debut album Planet Pop on May 9, 2000 in Europe, and on May 17, 2002 in the United Kingdom. It was produced and recorded by German producer Alex Christensen on December 1, 1999 with its melody almost entirely based on "Pesenka". The single reached number one on the German Singles chart in 2000. It also reached number one in Austria and Switzerland, the Top 20 in Australia, Belgium, Canada, the Netherlands, Finland, France, Italy, Sweden, United Kingdom, Denmark, Poland, Romania and Scotland. It reached #24 in the Irish Singles Chart.
The song was also a surprise one-hit wonder in the United States, peaking as high as number #28 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and stayed on the chart for several months. As a result, it was featured among the 2001 compilation album Now That's What I Call Music! 6, which further exposed ATC to a North American audience for one time. However, because of scant promotion for the album and a lack of touring in the USA and Canada, North America had quickly forgotten and lost interest in the act; by the end of 2001, the fan-base and growing interest in the group had drastically fallen into obscurity in North America among mainstream patrons. Contrary to the song title and prevalent only in 14 countries of Europe, Australia, Canada and USA (17 out of 196 countries of the world), the song never entered the South American, continental African and/or continental Asian, markets or charts due to ATC's limited popularity to the general public.
By mid-2003, the song had declined and lost in global popularity due to ATC's disbandment, rendering it completely independent from the public forever. The song would later be used for covers, remixes and other versions after its release. In end of 2008, it was first sampled by Norwalk rapper Chris Webby in his song "La La La", with its melody almost entirely based on the ATC version, in its low-pitch and slow-tempo variant.
